Joseph Hayne Rainey, the first and only African American to serve as Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, was born on this day in Georgetown, S.C. In 1874, Rainey, a South Carolina Republican, was elected Speaker pro tempore, the chamber's presiding officer.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike “Iron Mike” Tyson is scheduled to appear next month in a Broadway play directed by Spike Lee, according to Tyson's website, miketyson.com The one-man show, “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth,” will be Tyson's acting debut on Broadway and Lee's debut as a director of a Broadway play.
