Charles Rangel Wins New York Primary

It wasn't the last hurrah for Charles Rangel after all.

During New York's Democratic primary election on Tuesday, U.S. Rep.  Rangel captured 41 percent of the vote to win the redrawn 13th Congressional District, narrowly defeating New York State Sen. Adriano Espalliat.

Rangel, who is 82, has served in Congress since 1971, when he defeated Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.

Rangel has been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives 42 years, and he is one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The  District includes Harlem, El Barrio, Washington Heights, Inwood West Side and  the Bronx.

In another race involving a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, New York State Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries defeated New York City Councilman Charles Barron to win U.S. Rep. Edolphus "Ed"  Towns seat in the redrawn 8th Congressional District in Brooklyn.

Towns announced in April that he would not seek another term in office.
