Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., Easily Wins Democratic Primary

U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., faced someone who was supposed to have been a tough opponent in Tuesday's Democratic primary to retain his seat in Illinois 2nd Congressional District.

But Jackson easily won, capturing 74.27 percent of the vote to defeat former U.S. Rep. Deborah "Debbie" Halverson. She won 25.7 percent of the vote with 261 of the 263 precincts reporting, according to David Orr, the Cook County, Ill., clerk.

Jackson, who is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee, received 31,847 votes to Halverson's 11,049 votes in a bitter campaign.

The committee is investigating whether a Jackson emissary raised campaign funds for former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in return for Jackson's appointment to President Barack Obama's old U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich was recently sentenced to 14 years in a federal prison after a jury convicted him of corruption.

In other Illinois contests involving members of the Congressional Black Caucus, U.S. Rep. Danny K. Davis won the Democratic primary in the 7th Congressional District, capturing more than 78 percent of the vote. And U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush defeated five opponents to win the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District.

President Barack Obama won the Democratic primary for president and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the Republican primary, handily defeating former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.
