Don Thompson Takes over as McDonald's CEO on Saturday

Chain Opens World Largest Restaurant in London for the Summer Olympic Games

Don Thompson takes over this weekend as the first African-American CEO of the McDonald's Corp., the world's largest restaurant chain, the same week the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company showed off the world's largest eating establishment.

On Monday, McDonald's previewed its flagship Olympic Park restaurant in London for the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. It one of the four McDonald's the company has built on Olympic Park. The Summer Olympics began July 27.

The Olympic Park flagship McDonald's seats 1,500, including 70 seats on a second- floor balcony that provides diners with a view of the Olympic Athletic Stadium.

A restaurant staff of 500 will serve the usual fare of Chicken McNuggets, French fries and Big Macs. Other menu items, which are not familiar to the American palette, include porridge and a new fruit drink, Fruitizz.  Company executives said the menu will be the most expansive of any Olympic Games.

McDonald's will have express lanes as well as traditional ordering counter service. Customers can pay with contactless cards, swiped cards or cash.

The flagship  is a large pop-up store made of environmentally sound materials.  McDonald's will dismantle the restaurant after the games end Aug. 12. Seventy-five percent of the building's materials will be reused and nearly every item will be recycled, McDonald's officials said.

Thompson, 48, who is currently McDonald's president and chief operating officer, succeeds Jim Skinner, who retires on Friday. Thompson begins his new job on Saturday.

McDonalds operates more than 35,000 locations in 119 countries.
