  • NorthStar Letters: The Help

I never had any desire to see The Maid or The Blind Side or Driving Miss Daisy or any movie or stage play that doesn't progress a political thought, character and/or idea about the life and lives of Black people. African Americans as a group are so much more sophisticated and savvy than the media ever portrays us and, at best, I find that disheartening on every level.

Editorial: Tape a Photo of Racist Judge to the Fridge

Black men should tape a photograph of Judge Richard F. Cebull to their refrigerator door to remind them what is at stake in November's presidential election.

Cebull is chief judge for the U.S. District Court for Montana, and he is an unabashed racist in the tradition of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney.

Taney, who was chief justice from1836 to 1864, ruled that black men had no rights that a white man had to respect. In the 1857 Dred Scott Decision, Taney led the majority of the court by ruling that blacks were inferior and could not be considered citizens of the United States.

Cebull, who was appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush, comes from the same mold as Taney. The Montana judge forwarded an e-mail that implied that President Barack Obama's mother gave birth to him after having sex with a dog. President Obama's mother is white and his father is black. Cebull thought the e-mail was a joke, and he claims by forwarding it he is not a racist.

Taney's Dred Scott decision helped spark the Civil War. I hope Cebull's action helps get record numbers of black men to the polls in November.
