Florida A&M Names Interim Music Chair as the School Continues Its Search for New Director of Bands

Florida A&M University has named Kawachi Clemons, assistant professor of music, interim chair of the music department, replacing longtime chair Dr. Julian White, who retired in May following the 2011 hazing death of drum major Robert Champion, Jr.

"I am honored by the opportunity to serve as the interim chair of the school of music," Clemons said. "I look forward to building on the foundation laid by the faculty members, staff, trustees, students and alumni."

Clemons, who also is director of the Institute for Research in Music and Entertainment Studies, has had wide experience in the music business.  He has served on the production staff of the Academy Awards and the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show in addition to managing numerous special events for Walt Disney Entertainment. He also is the former director of the Hip Hop Initiative.

A Florida native, Clemons earned a doctorate from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Clemons' appointment follows an announcement in late June that FAMU launched a nationwide search for a new director of bands.  The 71-year-old White also was director of bands, but under a recent restructuring the positions of music chair and band director will be separate.  The bands director now reports to the head of the music department.

"The university's goal is to hire a new band director before the end of the fall 2012 semester," said Larry Robinson, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. "The new director of bands will play a lead role in implementing new policies and procedures that are critical to the future of the Marching "100," which has been suspended for the 2012-2013 academic year."

School officials named Rodner Wright, dean of the School of Architecture, chairman of the search committee, which includes 13 faculty, staff, student and alumni members.

To qualify for the position, candidates must have a degree in music and a minimum of five years experience directing bands at the collegiate level. The job is a full-time, tenure track position and it will be either an associate or full professor based on the experience of the person who is hired.

The 26-year-old Champion died Nov. 19, 2011, from internal bleeding while aboard a bus chartered by the FAMU band in Orlando, Fla. As a result of the circumstances surrounding his death, FAMU, which is based in Tallahassee, generated nationwide attention---almost all of it negative.

Florida prosecutors indicted some band members for Champion's death.

Kappa Kappa Psi, the honorary band fraternity, voted to remove the Delta Iota Chapter at Florida A&M from its roster of active chapters for at least five years or until May 3, 2017.

White, who joined FAMU's music department in 1972, retired in May.
