George Zimmerman Back in Jail in Trayvon Martin Case

George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, is back in jail after a Seminole County, Fla., judge revoked his bond.

Circuit Judge Kenneth R. Lester, Jr., ordered Zimmerman to return to jail after determining that Zimmerman and his wife, Shelly, had access to $135,000 in their credit union account when Shelly claimed the couple did not have any funds.

Shelly Zimmerman testified under oath at an April 20 bond hearing that she and her husband did not have any assets to pay a high bond.

“[We're] trying to pull together the members of the family to scrape up anything that we possibly can,” she testified under questioning from her husband's attorney, Mark O'Mara.

Believing the couple's testimony, Judge Lester released Zimmerman April 23, 2012, on a $150,000 bond. Lawyers for Trayvon Martin's parents argued that the amount was too low for a person charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors investigated and learned that Zimmerman had access to a large amount of funds.

“The court relied on false representations and statements by defendant [George Zimmerman] and Shelly Zimmerman,”  Florida Assistant State Attorney Bernardo de la Rionda wrote in a June 1 court filing.

Zimmerman is charged with shooting to death Martin, an unarmed teenager, on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman admitted shooting and killing Martin, but Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge.

Zimmerman was booked into John E. Polk Correctional Facility on Sunday, June 3 where officials are holding him without bond. According to unconfirmed news reports, Zimmerman is receiving more than $1,000 per day in donations since he returned to jail.
