Michael Nutter, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Calls on Members to Fight Black-on-Black Crime

by Frederick H. Lowe
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who recently was sworn in as the 70th president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, called on his fellow mayors to face the epidemic of violence in their cities involving young black men, a call too often met with deafening silence.

"In 2011, 75 percent of Philadelphia's homicide victims were African-American males," Nutter said on Saturday during his acceptance speech. "If 230 people were killed by tainted spinach in Philadelphia, the USDA would issue a national recall immediately. If 230 people were killed in an airplane crash, there would be congressional hearings on air travel. However, 230 African-American men are killed in one city, and nothing.  Nothing but silence."

Mayor Nutter noted that the murders of black men constitute a nationwide epidemic, not just a problem in Philadelphia. He added that the country must put together a bold plan to stop the killings.

"If our country's response to domestic terrorism was on the scale of our response to international terrorism, we could overcome this devastating violence, health disparities and educational gaps in a generation," Nutter said."There must be a national conversation on the impact of this violence on our families, our communities and our country. We know that violence breeds upon itself, and the longer we wait to act, the more intractable these problems become."

Nutter thanked Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans and more than 20 other mayors for joining him through a Cities United initiative to tackle black-on-black violence.

Mayor Nutter succeeded Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles during the mayors’ 80th annual convention in Orlando, Fla. The Washington, D.C.-based organization represents the 1,210 cities with populations of 30,000 or more.
