Employment population ratio rises for men, drops for women

The employment population ratio, which represents the percentage of the population that is employed, fell for African Americans 20 years old and older in May, according to the University of California at Berkeley Labor Center for Work in the Black Community.

The ratio was 56.6 percent for black men and black women in May, compared with 57 percent in April, the labor center reported.
 
For black men, however, the employment population ratio rose slightly in May to 58.4 percent from 58.1 percent in April.

The Employment Population Ratio for white men 20 years old and older in May dropped slightly to 68.5 percent from 68.6 percent in April.

The highest employment population ratio for black men was 64.7 percent, which was recorded in December 2007. The highest for white men in the same age group was 73.3 percent, which also was recorded in December 2007.

May's employment population ratio for black women 20 years old and older was 55.1 percent, down from 56.1 percent in April. The employment population ratio for white women climbed, compared to black women. It was 55.1 percent for white women in May, up from 54.8 percent in April.

The highest employment population ratio for black women 20 years old and older was 59.1 percent, which was recorded in December 2007. The highest employment ratio for white women was 57.8 percent, also recorded in December 2007.
