NorthStar News & Analysis African American Facts and Figures

The American Cancer Society has listed the leading causes of cancer deaths among black men and women in 2011 and in 2012, based on 2011 estimates. 

According to “Cancer Facts & Figures for African Americans 2011-2012,” the leading causes of cancer deaths among men are:

·    Lung and bronchus
·    Prostate
·    Colon and rectum
·    Pancreas
·    Liver and intrahepatic bile duct
·    Stomach
·    Leukemia
·    Myeloma
·    Kidney
·    Esophagus

All of the cancers combined are expected to claim the lives of 33,900 black men, with lung cancer accounting for 29 percent of the deaths and prostate cancer accounting for 16 percent of cancer deaths among African-American men.

The leading causes of cancer death among black women are:

·    Lung and bronchus
·    Breast
·    Colon and rectum
·    Pancreas
·    Uterine corpus
·    Ovary
·    Myeloma
·    Uterine Cervix
·    Leukemia
·    Liver & intrahepatic bile duct

All of the cancers combined are expected to claim the lives of 31,640 black women, with lung cancer accounting for 22 percent of deaths and breast cancer accounting 19 percent of cancer deaths among black women.
