Openly Gay, Black Man Named to New Jersey Supreme Court

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday nominated an openly gay, black man as one of seven justices to serve on the state Supreme Court.

Bruce A. Harris, mayor of the Borough of Chatham, N.J., would become the third African American and the first openly gay member of the court, which has been one of the most influential in the nation.

Chatham voters elected the 61-year-old Harris mayor in November 2011. He is believed to be the only openly gay, black Republican mayor in the country.

Harris, who has practiced law for more than 20 years, earned a law degree from Yale Law School. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from Boston University's Graduate School of Management.

Gov. Christie said he nominated Harris to diversify the court. In addition to Harris, Christie also nominated Phil Kwon, who would become the first Asian American to serve on the court. Kwon is the state's first assistant attorney general. The New Jersey Senate must approve both nominations. If approved, both men would serve an initial seven-year term on the court, which sits in Trenton, the state capital.

“I am extraordinarily proud to announce these historic nominations to the New Jersey State Supreme Court,” Christie said. “Bruce and Phil are each accomplished and talented individuals with skilled legal minds who are highly respected in the legal community. Just as importantly, each of them has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to serving their state and communities.”

The New Jersey court has been a national leader in Constitutional review, individual rights, social and political cases.
