Romney Picks Ryan, Creating an All-White-Male Team

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has selected Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate, creating an all-white-male team, which looks like an anachronism in the age of diversity.

Ryan, who is chairman of the House Budget Committee, is also the author of “The Path to Prosperity” or the Ryan Budget.

Robert Greenstein, president of the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, called the Ryan Budget “Robin Hood in reverse on steroids.” The center is Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, nonpartisan policy institute that analyzes government programs.

“It would likely produce the largest redistribution of income from the bottom to the top in modern U.S. history and likely will increase poverty and inequality more than any other budget in recent times (and possibly in the nation’s history,” Greenstein wrote.

He noted that the Ryan budget would cut:

• Medicaid by more than $800 billion over the next 10 years and steadily larger cuts would be made after that;
• Food-stamp benefits by $133 million over 10 years in addition to cutting Pell grants;
• Ryan’s budget would also cut funds for veterans’ health care, highways, education, national parks, food safety, clean air and clean water enforcement;
• The budget also would raise Medicare’s eligibility age from 65 to 67 for people turning 65 in 2023, even as  it repeals health reform’s coverage expansions;

In the addition, Ryan’s budget would provide massive tax cuts for the wealthy.

Ryan said the changes in domestic programs are necessary due to the nation’s severe fiscal crisis and to protect hardworking taxpayers.

"The nation’s fiscal straits, however, surely do not justify massive tax cuts for the wealthiest people alongside budget cuts that would cast tens of millions of less fortunate Americans into the ranks of the uninsured, take food from poor children, make it harder for low-income students to get a college degree, and squeeze funding for research, eduction and infrastructure,” Greenstein wrote.

Princeton, N.J.-based Gallup Daily Tracking reported on Wednesday that a telephone poll of registered voters showed a tepid response to Ryan's selection as vice president.
