Black Employment-Population Ratio Unchanged in August

by Frederick H. Lowe
The employment-population ratio for black men and black women 20 years old and older was virtually unchanged in August at 56.2 percent, compared with July's 56.1 percent, the University of California at Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education reported on Friday.

For black men, the employment-population ratio was 57.7 percent, which was unchanged from July. For black women, the ratio was 55.1 percent, a slight increase from July.

The employment-population ratio represents the percentage of the population that is employed, and it can be interpreted as the probability that a member of the population is employed.

It captures employment prospects better than the unemployment rate since jobless individuals who are not in the labor force, including discouraged workers,  are not calculated in the unemployment rate, reports the labor center, which publishes Work in the Black Community.
