Denzel Washington's Film About a Pilot May Land Him An Oscar

Flight, a new film that stars Denzel Washington as a pilot who miraculously lands his plane safely after a mid-air catastrophe, is already being touted as one that will land Washington another Oscar for his powerful interpretation of a complex role. In a plot twist, the heroism of Washington’s character is marred by the fact that he tests positive for an elevated blood alcohol level.

The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis, will be offered as the final feature at the 50th New York Film Festival, that opened Friday, September 28 and will close on Sunday, October 14.

Flight will open nationwide on November 2. The film represents Zemeckis’ first foray into live-action cinema since the 2000 release of Cast Away, a blockbuster film, starring Tom Hanks. Flight’s strong cast includes Don Cheadle, John Goodman and Melissa Leo (see NorthStar's Video of the Week).

Flight is Washington’s 47th film. He won an Oscar for best actor in the 2001 action film Training Day for his portrayal of rogue-evil police detective Alonzo Harris. Washington was the second black man to win an Oscar for best performance by an actor. The first was Sidney Poitier, who won the award in 1963 for his starring role in Lilies of the Field.
