Ethiopia’s Kebede Breaks Record for Chicago Marathon

Ethiopian runner Tsegaye Kebede set a course record in Sunday’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Kebede ran the 26.2-mile mostly flat course in 2:04:38, breaking the previous record of 2:05:37, set in 2011 by Moses Mosop of Kenya.

Kebede is the first Ethiopian to win the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Bank of America Chicago Marathon’s 35th year by rewriting the record books,” said Carey Pinkowski, the race’s executive director.

The temperature at race time was 42 degrees, and winds were light. The lead men’s pack of 12 runners reached the halfway point in 1:02:54. At 25K, Kebede took the lead, running the last 13.1 miles in 1:01:44. Fellow Ethiopian runners Feyisa Lilesa finished second, and Tilahun Regassa was third.

Atsede Baysa also of Ethiopia won the women’s race in 2:22:03, edging out Rita Jeptoo of Kenya, who had a time of 2:22:04. Kenyan Lucy Kabuu finished third with a time of 2:22:41.

Some 45,000 runners participated in Chicago's marathon, and the event attracted more than 1.7 million spectators.
