Great Scott! Beverly Scott Becomes the First Woman to Head Boston’s MBTA

Beverly A. Scott, a graduate of Howard and Fisk universities, has been named head of the Massachusetts public transportation system.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Board of Directors on Monday named Scott, a 30-year transportation veteran, general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and division administrator of MassDOT Rail & Transit.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which is often referred to as the MBTA or The T, is the public operator of most of the bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry routes in  the Boston area. Scott is the first woman general manager of the MBTA, which is the nation’s fifth-largest transportation system, carrying 1.3 million riders each weekday.

MassDOT’s divisions include highways, aeronautics, registration of motor vehicles, and rail and transit. This includes the MBTA and all regional transit authorities in Massachusetts.

Scott is currently CEO and general manager of the Metropolitan Atlanta Transit Authority, MARTA, the nation’s 9th-largest public transit system. In Boston, she will receive a three-year contract and annual salary of $220,000. She is expected to join the MBTA in early 2013.

Prior to joining MARTA, she was CEO and general manager of the Sacramento, Calif., regional transit district and general manager of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority in Providence.

The board selected Scott from 22 applicants whose names and resumes were forwarded to a preliminary screening committee.

Scott graduated magna cum laude with a bachelors of arts degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn. She then earned a Ph.D. in political science and public administration from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
