Jesse Jackson, Jr., Goes Back to Mayo Clinic

U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., has returned to the Mayo clinic to continue treatment for a bipolar disorder that has sidelined him for months, said U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who visited Jackson on Monday in his Washington, D.C. home.

“He [Jackson] needs therapy, and he needs to be in a therapeutic setting. He needs to be able to walk out his house and not see reporters waiting for him,” Davis said on Tuesday during a radio interview. Davis and U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, both of Chicago, visited with Jackson for an hour in Washington.

Jackson, who represents Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District, had been admitted earlier to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where physicians treated him for Bipolar II disorder, a mood disorder, that affects parts of the brain that control emotion, thought and drive.

Jackson took a leave of absence on June 10, but his congressional office staff did not disclose that he had left until two weeks later. The Mayo Clinic released him in September, but it was still not clear when he would return to work. Recently Jackson robo-called his constituents, saying he was trying to heal.

Davis said Jackson worries that his congressional district is not getting the representation it deserves because of his absence.  Nevertheless, Jackson remains on the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election, which he expects to win for another term.

Davis added, however, that the biggest challenge Jackson faces is his health and his ability to maintain stability.
