More Black Women Delegates Attend the DNC

More black women than black men served as delegates at the recently held Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., according to a report published by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank for black elected officials.

The report titled, “Blacks & the 2012 Democratic National Convention,” reported that 844 or 58.1 percent of the delegates were black women, compared with 604 or 41.9 percent who were black men, wrote Dr. David A. Bositis, senior political analyst, and the report’s author. A total of 5,556 voting delegates attended the convention.

African Americans made up 26.2 percent of the convention’s delegates, which is up from 24.3 percent in 2008 and 20.1 percent in 2004, the report stated. The number of black alternate delegates was 93, down from 136 in 2008 and 105 in 2004.

Thirty-nine states had more black delegates than in 2008; five states had fewer and six states’ delegate counts were unchanged.

The report notes there are 20 states and the District of Columbia where African Americans comprise a significant voting block. Those states and the black share of their total vote are:
