Rep. Wilson Awards $10,000 in Scholarships

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla. has awarded $10,000 in college scholarships to students in her district in recognition of United Nations World Humanitarian Day.

Wilson, a first-term congresswoman who represents Florida’s 17th Congressional District, awarded the scholarships to students who graduated from high school in 2012, as well as students currently pursuing their education. The 17th district includes parts of northern Miami-Dade and Southeast Broward counties.

World Humanitarian Day, which is celebrated every August 19, recognizes people helping people, said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

“I join with the United Nations in recognizing those who have died and continue to put their lives on the line each day, fighting for the rights of others around the world,” Wilson said.

World Humanitarian Day also commemorates the deaths of 22 U.N. staff workers who were killed on Aug. 19, 2003, when the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, was bombed.
